Milk Statistics

Survey purpose and legal basis

The survey's primary purpose is to provide information on the amount of cow's milk collected by dairy processors, which in turn gives an indication of the amount of milk being produced on Irish farms.

These data are a requirement of the Regulation (EU) 2022/2379 on statistics on agricultural input and output, as set out in the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2745 on animal production statistics. The Directive 96/16/EC under which these data were previously collected is now repealed. The results are used within the CSO for agriculture and national accounts.

Who uses the results?

The aggregated results from the Milk Statistics Survey are published monthly on the CSO website.

The data is used by national and international agricultural agencies, Eurostat, Government Departments and other organisations.

Is your personal data confidential and how long will the data be retained?

Yes. All information supplied to the CSO is treated as strictly confidential. The Statistics Act, 1993 sets stringent confidentiality standards. Information collected may be used only for statistical purposes, and no details related to an identifiable person or business may be divulged to any other government department or body.

Our results are only ever made available in aggregate form and we make sure that it is impossible for individuals or businesses to be identified. The data will be securely held for a maximum period of seven years from the date of issue of this survey and can only be used for statistical purposes.
