Environment Survey

Survey purpose and legal basis

The Environment Survey gathers information on how households across Ireland interact with the environment. It is a voluntary survey carried out under Section 24 of the Statistics Act, 1993.  

Personal data is lawfully processed under Articles 6(1)(e), and 9(2)(j) of the General Data Protection Regulation and Section 38(1) of the Data Protection Act 2018. 

Who uses the results?

The data collected in this survey will be published nationally at an aggregated level only. We will ensure that it is not possible to identify an individual person from the data we publish or share. Anonymised survey information may be provided to other government departments, approved organisations and approved researchers for statistical purposes only.

Is your personal data confidential and how long will the data be retained?

All information supplied to the CSO is treated as strictly confidential in accordance with Section 33 of the Statistics Act, 1993, and will be used for statistical purposes only.

We will retain the survey data indefinitely as one of the primary purposes of the data collection is to obtain longitudinal information on how households interact with the environment.
