Background Notes

Introduction

The Pig Survey is a biannual survey of specialised pig producers, which provides estimates for the number of pigs in June and December of the reference year at State level. The data is collected in accordance with Regulation (EC) No.1165/2008.

Coverage

Specialised pig farms (mostly intensive units).

Results

The results are based on the trends between the reference year and the preceding year, obtained by comparing the returns for the same matched sample of farms. The results from the June Pig Survey are published in the June Pig Survey release and the results from the December Pig Survey are published as part of the December Livestock Survey release.

As figures in the text and tables have been rounded to the nearest 100 units there may be slight discrepancies between the sum (or difference) of the constituent items and the totals shown.
