The CSO has a coordination role in a major project aimed at supporting the use of AI and Machine Learning in the production of official statistics.
The project, which includes 15 countries across Europe, is called "AI and Machine Learning for Official Statistics (AIML4OS)", and it will run for four years from April 2024 to March 2028.
The overarching goal of the project is to provide a comprehensive set of resources that can be used by staff across the European Statistical System (ESS) to implement AI and machine learning in their organisations.
These resources will include:
Guidelines and implementation frameworks.
Working use cases.
Sample code.
Information on technical resources.
The project is developed through 13 Work Packages (WPs). Six of these are 'Supporting Workpackages', which have operational functions and deliver cross-cutting goals for the project. The remaining seven are 'Use Case Workpackages' which explore specific themes within AI/ML that are believed will offer huge opportunities for statistical production in the coming years.
WP 1: Project management and coordination
WP 2: Communication and community engagement
WP 3: ESS AI/ML lab: Technical infrastructure and organisational setup
WP 4: AI/ML state-of-play and ecosystem monitoring
WP 5: Standards, methodological and implementation frameworks
WP 6: Knowledge repository and training material
WP 7: AI/ML on earth observation data, satellite imagery
WP 8: Editing Focus - Statistically valid and efficient editing and imputation in official statistics by AI/ML
WP 9: Imputation Focus - Statistically valid and efficient editing and imputation in official statistics by AI/ML
WP 10: From text to code – Experiences and potential of the use of AI/ML for classifying and coding
WP 11: Applying ML for estimating firm-level supply chain networks
WP 12: Large language models
WP 13: Generation of synthetic data in official statistics: techniques and applications
The CSO is responsible for the overall management of the AIML4OS project which is covered under WP1 (Project management & co-ordination). A core project team within the CSO has been created to manage, monitor and deliver all aspects of the project.
The overarching aim of WP1 is to achieve the overall objectives of the AIML4OS project, building on collaborative synergies among the members of the consortium and through pro-active communication exchange and involvement of NSIs and external partners within and beyond the consortium.
The specific objectives are to support, coordinate and facilitate the consortium activities in the project, while also taking measures to ensure adequate quality levels of the outputs that can be realised and remain sustainable across the whole ESS.
The CSO also have Observers assigned to workpackages from the project. These Observers are learning and absorbing valuable knowledge from the various use cases and sharing it within the CSO as the project progresses.
