The ESC is a competition organised by Eurostat and volunteering National Statistical Institutes addressed to secondary school students with the purpose of encouraging students to get familiar with statistics and official statistical sources.
The winners of the CSO John Hooper Statistical Poster Competition from both age categories are eligible to go forward and represent Ireland in this competition.
Participating teams will make a video in which they will have to explain a statistical concept. Videos will have a maximum length of two minutes. The topic is revealed to participating teams in March each year. By referencing appropriate statistics, contestants must demonstrate how their country or region compares with its European counterparts, highlighting interesting characteristics in relation to the European average.

When evaluating the selected videos, the jury of the European phase of the ESC will take into account:
• The creativity of the video
• The message of the video: is it understandable / convincing according to the concept / question raised
• The effectiveness of the video to get its message across
• The concordance between the pdf document and the video
• The inclusion of sources and credits to material used (like music, images, etc).

Each member and mentor of the winning European teams from both age categories will receive the following awards:
• gift card of €400
• certificate of achievement
• publications and Eurostat promotional material
