Welcome by chair and approval of minutes
Chair Orla McCarthy (CSO) introduced the meeting. The CSO want to invite input on how to serve data needs for researchers and policy makers. The liaison group covers a wide range of topics – the focus for this meeting was on Energy data. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved without amendment.
Kevin Hunt (CSO) reviewed recent energy-related CSO releases, and planned energy-related data acquisitions. Details of planned RMFs linking household energy ratings and energy consumption were discussed, and the timeline for their release. Data from these will also be made available as statistical releases.
Grzegorz Glaczynski (CSO) presented the recent releases of Metered Electricity Consumption 2024 and Data Centres Metered Electricity Consumption 2024. The releases use comprehensive metered electricity consumption from ESBN to provide data and insight on electricity consumption in Ireland and regionally. Grzegorz explained the methodology of how the CSO identify data centres in the data.
Orla McCarthy (CSO) presented key findings from the recent release on Business Energy Use 2023. The release combines CSO business survey data with multiple other sources to give an overview of energy use by businesses in Ireland, broken down by fuel type and NACE 2 Sector.
The meeting concluded with a roundtable discussion on data needs from users. Individual responses were noted for future developments. Data for measuring emissions by businesses, consumers and households was mentioned as a key focus. For example, data on fuels used for home heating, or on specific imported products affecting the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Input from the CSO in creating and maintaining lists of indicators for specific policy purposes was also a topic of interest. Climate statistics as well as energy statistics are needed, such as data on the risks and impact of climate change on people and sectors.
