The Climate and Energy Statistics Liaison Group was established in June 2024. It was formed to ensure input from key stakeholders into the evolving data and insights around climate and energy. This is relevant for legislative reporting requirements at national and international levels, and for providing those policymakers working to address the climate emergency with timely, reliable, and relevant data.
The liaison group recognises the broader context for climate and energy data and insights, including the drivers for climate change, the health, environment, and socio-economic impacts, as well as the suite of mitigation and adaptation policy responses.
The group’s objectives are in strategic alignment with those of the National Statistics Board and the CSO. Environment and Climate statistics are a main theme of the National Statistics Board’s current statement of priorities, recognising the value of linking diverse datasets on emissions and of building collaborations between the CSO and other public bodies.
The objectives of the liaison group are as follows:
• To create a forum to inform the development of the data and insights that are needed to inform climate and energy policymaking and research.
• To identify and prioritise data and statistics needs relating to climate action plan targets and other Government priorities in this area.
• To stimulate discussion and, where appropriate, to support data access, data sharing and data linkage for statistical and research purposes among public agencies and research institutes; and
• To leverage CSO expertise in data collection, analytics, and governance to support the broader data ecosystem for climate and energy data and insights.
The membership of the group includes representatives from those Irish state agencies, departments, and research institutes taking a direct interest in climate and energy statistics.
Membership may evolve over time as the community of interest in climate and energy data and insights grows. Future membership can be taken from:
• Statisticians from the Irish statistical system
• Policy analysts from government departments relating to climate, energy, and environment statistics.
• Researchers from academic institutions working on climate and energy topics
• Other analysts and researchers from organisations in need of climate and energy data
The CSO will appoint the chair and secretarial roles. They will be responsible for organisation of meetings. Meetings will occur as deemed necessary by the group but no less than twice-yearly. Meetings will allow members to share updates, report on data needs, and discuss collaborations or initiatives.
