This chapter presents information on the tourism sector of the Irish economy. The tourism and travel information covers earnings and expenditure from tourism and travel as well as detailing the number of trips to Ireland classified by area of residence and reason for journey. Details of foreign and domestic travel by Irish residents classified by region visited and reason for journey are also included.

In 2015, 8.6 million overseas trips were made by non-residents to Ireland compared to 7.6 million trips in 2014, an increase of 13.7%.  Residents of Great Britain took over 3.5 million trips to Ireland during 2015, an increase of 383,000 trips (12.1%) compared to 2014. The average length of stay in Ireland by all overseas travellers fell marginally from 7.2 nights in 2014 to 7.1 nights in 2015.  The most important overseas markets in terms of non-fare expenditure within Ireland in 2015 were USA and Canada (28.4%) and Great Britain (23.1%).

The number of overseas trips to Ireland for the purpose of holiday/leisure/recreation increased by 677,000 trips between 2014 and 2015, to 4.0 million trips, a rise of 20.4%. During the same period, the number of trips to visit friends and relatives rose by 88,000 trips to just under 2.3 million trips, an increase of 4.0%.

Excluding fares, expenditure by overseas travellers increased by 18.6% in 2015, from €3,548 million in 2014 to €4,208 million. Of this €4,208 million, 55.4% was spent by overseas travellers for holiday/leisure/recreation purposes, 19.1% by those travelling to visit friends and relatives, 16.0% by business travellers and the remaining 9.5% by those travelling for other reasons.

Almost 7.1 million outbound trips were undertaken by Irish residents in 2015. The average length of stay on outbound trips was 7.5 nights, varying from 6.6 nights within the European Union, 13.9 nights in North America and 25.7 nights in Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. Irish residents spent a total of €6,022.1 million on outbound trips during 2015, over two thirds (69.5%) of this expenditure was spent within the European Union.

In 2015, Irish residents took over 9.1 million domestic trips. The average length of stay for domestic trips was 2.8 nights, resulting in a total of 25.3 million bed nights. Holidays accounted for over half of all domestic trips (51%), while almost a third (32%) were to visit friends or relatives. Total expenditure by Irish residents on domestic trips for 2015 amounted to €1,725 million with spending on holidays increasing by 7.8% in 2015 to €1,070 million.
