Questions on Overtime

The following 3 questions (OVERTIME, OTHHRS and PAIDHRS) all relate to overtime. We are trying to determine how many respondents do overtime, how much overtime they do and if they are paid for it.

Employing staff is a cumbersome and costly exercise. As many jobs have seasonal "peaks and valleys" i.e. busy times and slack times, it is often easier to ask existing staff to do overtime rather than hiring additional staff. Or in a busy economy (like Irelands) there may be a shortage of staff generally, or a shortage of particular skilled staff. In situations like these, overtime may be employed to compensate for a shortage of staff.

OVERTIME

Did you work overtime in the week ending Sunday dd/mm/yyyy?

1. Yes
2. No

OTHHRS

How many overtime hours did you work in the week ending Sunday dd/mm/yyyy?

Enter number
Range [0 - 140]

Questions On Shift Work

The following 3 questions (SHIFT, PATTERN and REASSFT) all relate to shiftwork. We are trying to determine how many respondents do shiftwork, what type of shiftwork they do and why they do it.

Which industries employ shiftwork? We want to know if only certain industries or occupations work shifts. Are these the same everywhere in Europe? How much of the workforce works shifts? If certain industries only work shifts, then anyone in that industry has no choice. We are also interested to know, how many people work shifts by choice.

SHIFT

Do you do shift work?

1. Yes
2. No

PATTERN

(Earlier in the questionnaire you said you do shift work). What type of shift work do you do?

1. Continuous shift work, usually a four shift system
2. Semi-continuous work, usually a three shift system
3. Two shift system or double day shift
4. Sometimes day, sometimes night shift system
5. Fixed assignment shift (e.g. always work same night shift)
6. Other type of shift

REASSFT

Why did you do shift work? Is it because..

1. that is the type of work you prefer?
2. There was no similar job (in the same industry or occupation) available without doing it?
3. Of other reasons

VARTIME

You said earlier that you have variable working hours. Which of the following best describes your situation?

1. Fixed start and finish to the working day i.e. no variable working hours
2. Annualised hours contract
3. Flexitime arrangement
4. Working time by mutual agreement
5. You can determine your own work schedule
6. Other form of variable working time
7. Not applicable

FLEXI

In the operation of the flexitime system, can you use the credit hours built up to take full days or weeks off (besides taking just hours off)?

1. Yes
2. No
This question simply clarifies what type of flexi arrangement is worked.

Questions on Contracts

The following 3 questions (MINMAX, ZEROHR and WORKTIME) all relate to contracts. We are trying to determine if any respondents have particular type of contracts, and if so, why?

The types of contracts are quite unusual for Ireland and are not typical. That said, they may exist for particular industries or occupations. We would like to know how many respondents work these type of contracts and what industries or occupations use these contracts. Do respondents work these contracts by choice, or are they a requirement of a particular occupation.

MINMAX

Do you have a guaranteed minimum number of hours work (per week or month) but the number of hours actually worked could be greater?

1. Yes
2. No (we would expect most people to fall into this category)
3. Not applicable (any remaining self-employed should select this)

ZEROHR

Do you work only when needed by your employer i.e. a regular or continuous work schedule cannot be guaranteed?

1. Yes
2. No (we would expect most people to fall into this category)
3. Not applicable (any remaining self-employed should select this)

WORKTIME

Why do you work these types of hours? Is it because..

1. that it is the type of arrangement you prefer?
2. There was no similar job (in the same industry or occupation) available without doing it?
3. Of other reasons?
