The Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS)
  • collects household-level data on households’ finances and consumption
  • is conducted throughout the Eurozone by the Household Finance and Consumption Network (HFCN) which consists of survey specialists, statisticians and economists from the ECB (European Central Bank), the national central banks of the Eurosystem and a number of national statistical institutes
  • is required by all Eurozone countries to facilitate comparable data analysis for the Euro area as a whole
HFCS is being undertaken in Ireland by the CSO during 2013…
  • interviewing 4,000 households in the country
  • collecting a broad range of household information from the adults taking the survey, including detail on households’ assets, liabilities, credit, savings and spending

  • assess the effects of the economic and financial crisis on households’ finances
  • improve policymakers’ understanding of cross-sectional distribution of debt and wealth and to lead to better decision making
  • create an EU wide picture of household assets and liabilities
