The supply and use tables for 2007, published today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), provide a detailed picture of the transactions of goods and services in the economy. They highlight the inter-industry flows that lie behind the national accounts main aggregates such as operating surplus, wages and salaries and external trade movements. It can be seen from Table 2 that, of the 52 detailed industries1 distinguished, the sectors with the largest contributions to Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2007 were construction (€16.2 billion, 9.8% of GVA)2 and real estate services (€13.9 billion, 8.3% of GVA)3. The latter sector includes imputed rent of owner-occupied dwellings. These sectors also made the largest contribution to GVA in 2006.

Profits

The sectors that had the highest profits (“net operating surplus”) were the manufacture of chemical products4, real estate services and financial intermediation services5. The profits of the manufacturers of chemicals were €9.8 billion in 2007. The corresponding amounts for the real estate services sector, which includes imputed rent in respect of owner-occupied dwellings, were €9.1 billion and for financial intermediation services, profits were €5.9 billion. Other sectors that had high net operating surplus include wholesale trade and construction.

Wages & Salaries

Construction contributed by far the most of the industrial sectors in terms of compensation of employees (€11.3billion). The other sectors with a high aggregate compensation of employees were health and social work services6, education7, public administration8 and business services9.
