Total service exports increased by €8.8bn from €81.5bn in 2011 to €90.3bn in 2012.   An increase of €3.9bn in service imports from €83.2bn in 2011 to €87.1bn in 2012 was not as significant as the rise in service exports. As a result, the service balance moved from a deficit of €1.7bn in 2011 to a surplus of €3.2bn in 2012 – the highest service balance since records began.  

Computer services at €35.7bn was the largest export category and accounted for 40 per cent of total service exports in 2012. The residual category Other Business services at €35.6bn was the largest import category while imports of Royalties/Licences were €32.8bn.   When combined,  these two import categories accounted for 78 per cent of total service imports in 2012 (see Table 1).

Service exports to the UK increased by €2.3bn between 2011 and 2012, mainly in the Other Business services category (see Tables 2a & 2b). Exports to France and Italy were up €0.9bn and €0.7bn respectively, mainly in the categories Computer services and Other Business services.  Exports to both Switzerland and Luxembourg fell by €1.5bn and €1.1bn, mainly in the Other Business services category.   

Service exports to the US increased by €2.3bn across a range of categories including Royalties, Communications & Computer services (+€1.4bn), Other Business services (+€0.5bn) and Financial services (+€0.3bn).  Japan accounted for €1.2bn of the increased exports to Asia  (+€2.3bn). 

Service imports from Netherlands increased by €3.1bn between 2011 and 2012, while imports from the US fell by €2.3bn mainly in Management services (-€2.7bn) with an offsetting an increase in Royalties imports (+€0.5bn).  Imports from Bermuda increased by €1.5bn.

Background Notes

The International Trade in Services provides on an annual basis greater analysis of the service components and significantly more geographical detail, including a cross-classification of service components according to counterpart country/region. The data are collected and compiled within the BOP framework and as such are designed to comply in so far as possible with the stipulated international methodological standards. They also conform closely with international presentation formats taking materiality and relevance into account as well as data confidentiality constraints. The results published in this release are generally compatible with the information supplied to and published by Eurostat and the European Central Bank (ECB) concerning the economic activities of EU and EMU residents with non-residents of these areas.  The figures are also compatible with those supplied to other international organisations such as IMF and OECD.
