CSO Hosted Data Dissemination Services
Background
This web site allows you easy access to large amounts of data in an efficient manner. You can select a subset of data before displaying or downloading it in the specified file format (i.e. .xls, .csv etc.). You therefore only download what you want rather than having to download large data files to access a small amount of statistical information. How the Data is Stored
The statistical data is stored in files containing multi-dimensional data tables or 'data cubes'. The files also contain the necessary metadata required to understand the data. These files are then grouped in 'Statistical Products' which in turn are associated with a number of Subject or Theme headings. A 'Statistical Product' can be associated with more than one Subject heading - for example the Statistical Product 'Agriculture Prices' is found under both the subject headings 'Agriculture' and 'Prices'.Accessing Data Tables
There are a number of ways to obtain a list of data tables.
1. You can use the Search facility.
2. You can use the subject tree, to drill down and select a 'Statistical Product' associated with that Subject to obtain a list of datasets for that Statistical Product. Note if there is only one statistical product associated with a Subject then choosing that Subject will automatically list the datasets in the statistical product for selection.
3. If your browser does not support javascript, you can use the subject listings page, to drill down and select a 'statistical product' to obtain a list of relevant datasets. Note if there is only one statistical product associated with a Subject then choosing that Subject will automatically list the datasets in the statistical product for selection.
Making a Data Selection
Once you have selected a dataset you will be presented with the facility of making a subselection on the dataset. A data table consists of one or more variables. Each variable contains a number of values. The variables are presented in boxes, from where you select the values needed for your table. Values can be selected one by one or in a large number. More tips on making your data selection.
At this stage you can choose what format you want your data presented in. However you cn also do this after seeing the table on screen by using some of the user buttons. Please note you are limited to the amount of data you can display on screen.
Software
If you plan to make multiple or large selections from a data table then it is adviseable to download the full data file. The website uses a file format called .px to hold the Data Tables. These .px files can be downloaded directly and used with the PC-Axis software.
