Cattle results have been obtained from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) AIM scheme.
Dairy cows are those kept principally to produce milk for human consumption.
Bulls used for breeding purposes only.
Sheep results from 2005 to 2016 are based on estimates from the CSO December Livestock Sample Survey of agricultural holdings.
The results from 2017 have been obtained from DAFM National Sheep and Goat Census and are not comparable with
the results for 2005 to 2016.
Gilts not yet served are at least 50 kg liveweight and intended for breeding
The regional composition is based on the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units) classification used by Eurostat. The NUTS3 regions correspond to the eight Regional Authorities established under the Local Government Act, 1991, Regional Authorities Establishment Order 1993, which came into operation on 1 January 1994.
