Survey Name:

National Survey of Transport of Goods by Road

Business Area:

Transport Section, Agriculture, Transport & Tourism Division.

Survey Purpose:

The survey results show the amount of work done, goods carried, empty running etc by Irish registered goods vehicles and give quarterly information on the scale and development of carriage of goods by road.

Legislative Basis:

Council Regulation (EC) 70 /2012 on statistical returns in respect of the carriage of goods by road

Periodicity:

Annual

Target Population:

Irish registered goods vehicles with an unladen weight of 2,000kgs and over

Sampling Frame:

Register of all vehicles taxed as goods vehicles with an unladen weight of 2 tonnes and over maintained in Transport section and updated every 8 weeks with goods vehicle file received from VRU.

Survey Size:

Approx. 25,000 p.a.

Principal Variables Collected:

Business of owner of vehicle. Hirecode (whether vehicle is for carriage of own goods or for hire/reward). Type of work normally done by vehicle. Unladen weight of vehicle. Load Capacity of vehicle. Weight of goods carried. Type of goods carried. Distance travelled. Origin. Destination.
