Survey Name:

Census of Agriculture

Business Area:

Register Section/Data Section, Agriculture Division.

Survey Purpose:

To compile census data on crops, livestock, farm machinery, farm labour and miscellaneous agricultural items

Legislative Basis:

Council Decision 72/279/EEC of 31 July 1972, Council Regulation (EEC) No 571/88 of 29 February 1988, Council Regulation (EEC) No 837/90 of 26 March 1990, Council Directive 93/24/EEC of 1 June 1993, Council Directive 93/25/EEC of 1 June 1993, Council Regulation (EU) 2467/96 of 17 December 1996, Council Directive 97/77/EC of 16 December 1997

Periodicity:

Every ten years approximately

Target Population:

All farms (i.e. any enterprise that produced agricultural products for profit)

Sampling Frame:

A census register was created, using administrative records supplied by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Teagasc and Bord Glas.

Survey Size:

All farms in the country. In 2000 this was 141,000 farms (in 1991 it was 170,000)

area farmed, pasture, principal crops, principal livestock categories, farm work force, labour input, farm machinery, miscellaneous

Government, Eurostat, Agriculturalists, Researchers
