Irish stocks of direct investment abroad decreased to €799bn at the end of 2016 from a stock position of €836bn at the end of 2015. The end 2016 stock of direct investment abroad comprised of Equity Capital & Reinvested Earnings of €725bn and Other Capital of €74bn - see Table 3.
The stock of direct investment in Ireland also decreased between the end of 2015 and the end of 2016 - from €816bn to €800bn - see Table 4.
The decrease in stock of direct investment abroad between the end of 2015 and the end of 2016 - from €836bn to €799bn was largely due to withdrawals of investment in the US (-€13bn), Luxembourg (-€27bn) and Switzerland (-€12bn) which were partially offset by increased investment in Central American offshore centres (€15bn) - see Table 3.
The decrease in stock of direct investment in Ireland between the end of 2015 and the end of 2016 - from €816bn to €800bn resulted from withdrawals of investment by US (-€123bn) which was offset by increased investment from Europe (€117bn) - see Table 4.
The net FDI for Ireland at the end of 2016 was a deficit of €882m, down €21bn from the net position at the end of 2015.
