  • Current public expenditure on health care in Ireland as a proportion of GNI increased from 6.7% in 2006 to 9.7% in 2009 before dropping over the next six years to 6.7% in 2015.
  • Current public expenditure on health care in Ireland as a proportion of modified GNI (GNI*) increased from 6.7% in 2006 to 10.1% in 2012 before decreasing to 8% in 2015. 
  • Over the time period 2006 to 2015 current public expenditure on health care per person, (at constant 2015 prices), increased by 11%, from €2,668 to €2,964.

  • Current health care expenditure in Ireland was 7.8% of GDP in 2015, the 15th highest proportion in the EU in 2015.
  • However, when expenditure on health in Ireland is calculated as a % of GNI*, Ireland had the highest rate of expenditure in the EU in 2014.
  • Seven EU countries spent more than 10% of GDP on current health care expenditure in 2015 while the rate was less than 6% in Latvia and Romania.
  • Ireland had the ninth highest current expenditure on health care in PPS in 2015 in the EU, with the highest in Luxembourg and the lowest in Romania.

  • Life expectancy at birth in Ireland, as calculated by the CSO, increased from under 58 years in 1925-27 for both males and females to 78.4 year for males and 82.8 years for females in 2010-2012.
  • Between 1926 and 2011 life expectancy at birth in Ireland increased by 21 years for males and 24.9 years for females.
  • In 1926 life expectancy at birth for females was 0.5 years higher than that for males. This gender gap increased to 5.7 years in 1986 but narrowed slightly to 4.4 years by 2011.
  • In 2011 a 65 year old man could expect to live for another 17.7 years, an increase of 4.9 years since 1926, while a 65 year old woman could expect to live for another 20.6 years, an increase of 7.2 years over the same time period.

  • Life expectancy at birth for males in Ireland in 2015, as calculated by Eurostat, was 79.6 years, 1.7 years above the EU average of 77.9 years.
  • Female life expectancy at birth in 2015 was 83.4 years, almost the same as the EU average.
  • The highest life expectancy in the EU for males was in Sweden at 80.4 years while the highest for females was 85.7 years in Spain.
  • Life expectancy at birth was higher for females in all EU countries, with the highest difference in Lithuania at 10.5 years while the lowest gap was in the Netherlands at 3.3 years.
  • In Ireland, life expectancy at birth for females was 3.8 years higher than for males in 2015.

  • Healthy life years at birth in Ireland for males was 66.6 years in 2015, the third highest rate in the EU and four years above the EU average.
  • Female healthy life years at birth in Ireland in 2015 was 67.9 years, 4.6 years above the EU average and the third highest rate in the EU.
  • The indicator for healthy life years at birth measures the number of years that a person at birth is expected to live without any severe or moderate health problems and is a composite indicator that combines mortality data with health status data, (see Appendix 1 for more information).
  • Health life years at birth in the EU in 2015 was highest for males in Sweden at 74 years and for females in Malta at 74.6 years.
  • Females had longer healthy life expectancies than males in about two-thirds of EU countries.

  • Irish males can expect to live 13 years in poor health, where the number of years in poor health is defined as life expectancy less healthy life expectancy.
  • Thus, Irish males can expect to  live 16.3% of their life expectancy in poor health which was the fourth lowest proportion in the EU in 2015.
  • Sweden had the lowest proportion of life expectancy in poor health for males at 8% while Austria and Estonia had the highest at 26.5%.

  • Irish females can expect to live 15.5 years in poor health, where the number of years in poor health is defined as life expectancy less healthy life expectancy.
  • Thus, Irish  females can expect to  live 18.6% of their life expectancy in poor health which was the fourth lowest proportion in the EU in 2015.
  • Malta had the lowest proportion of life expectancy in poor health for females at 11.2% while Portugal had the highest at 34.8%.
