John Hooper Medal for Statistics and
Tomorrow morning (October 24th), Dr Patricia O’Hara, Chairperson of the National Statistics Board in conjunction with Minister Séan Sherlock T.D. will award the John Hooper Medal for Statistics 2012. The prize giving will take place at the Clock Tower, Dept. of Education & Skills, Marlborough Street, Dublin 1 beginning at 11am.
As part of the proceedings, Minister Séan Sherlock will formally launch the John Hooper Medal for Statistics Poster Competition, 2013 which will have an agriculture theme. This poster competition will have an international aspect, the best poster, in two age categories, going forward to represent Ireland in the International Statistical Literacy Project poster competition. Dr Steve MacFeely, Assistant Director General of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) will launch, a special statistical release, with the findings from the latest CensusAtSchool 2011/2012 questionnaire.
With the Olympics on in London the CensusAtSchool 2011/2012 questionnaire had a health and sporting theme. Steve will present some interesting results on what teenagers eat for breakfast, where they put their mobile phones at night, their sporting habits and their favourite Olympians.
After the prize giving Aidan Mulloy and Brian Fallon, from Blackrock College, Dublin and the winners of the John Hooper Medal for Statistics 2012 will present on their prize winning poster Do certain subjects nurture divergent thinking better than others.
Prizes will be presented to the students with the top three winning posters and their schools. Also present at the event will be the students whose poster were highly commended or given an order of merit by the judges of the poster competition.Teachers, parents, family and friends have been invited to celebrate this great occasion.
Besides the CSO, the National Centre for Technology in Education, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and Project Maths, have all played central roles in the development of CensusAtSchool in particular and contributed to the success of the John Hooper Medal for Statistics competition.
