Overseas Travel

Survey purpose:

To provide country of residence analyses of arriving and departing overseas travellers into and out of Ireland.

Statistical Population:

All overseas travel into and out of Ireland by Irish Residents and Non Residents. However, travel by residents of Northern Ireland into or out of the Republic of Ireland and domestic travel within the Republic of Ireland is excluded.

Sampling Frame:

A sample of sailings and flights is selected and a systematic sample of passengers on each is surveyed. On the selected sailings/flights, a 1 in 5 systematic sample of passengers is selected and their country of residence is recorded. Sample results are grossed up to total passenger numbers provided by the airports and ferry companies.

The sample size for the Overseas Travel release in respect of February 2020 was just below 26,700 passengers.
