Births, Deaths and Marriages in Quarter 2 2012

 

 

The CSO today released the Vital Statistics Second Quarter 2012 report.

 

Some of the key points highlighted in the report are as follows:

 

Civil Partnerships

 

  • There were 120 civil partnerships registered in quarter 2 2012 bringing the total for the first six months of the year to 202. There were 536 such partnerships registered in 2011 following the introduction of the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act 2010, effective from the 4th January 2011.

 

Births

 

  • There were 4 births registered as being within civil partnerships in quarter 2 2012, 2 in quarter 1 2012 and 4 in the twelve months of 2011.
  • In total, there were 17,958 births registered in quarter 2 of 2012, a decrease of 2.3% in the number of births registered in the corresponding quarter of 2011. The quarter 2 2012 total is 15.2% higher than in quarter 2 2003 when 15,582 babies were registered.
  • Births in the second quarter of 2012 represented an annual birth rate of 15.7 per 1,000 of the population. The rate for the corresponding quarter of 2011 was 16.1 per 1,000 of the population and 15.7 per 1,000 of the population in quarter 2 2003.
  • Of the 17,958 births, there were 6,164 births registered as outside marriage/civil partnership. This accounted for 34% of all births. Of these, 3,449 births were to unmarried parents with the same address, 19% of all births. The highest percentage of births outside marriage/civil partnership occurred in Limerick City at 58%, while the lowest percentage occurred in Galway County, at 23%.
  • The average age of mothers for births registered in quarter 2 2012 was 31.9 years, 0.1 years more than the corresponding figure in quarter 2 2011, 0.7 years more than in quarter 2 2007, and 1.3 years more than in quarter 2 2003. The average age of mothers having their first child in quarter 2 2012 was 29.9 years.

 

Deaths

 

  • There were 7,080 deaths registered in quarter 2 2012, a decrease of almost 3% in the number of deaths registered in the second quarter of 2011. The quarter 2 2012 total represents a death rate of 6.2 per 1,000 of the population. This compares with 6.4 per 1,000 of the population for the corresponding quarter of 2011 and 7.2 per 1,000 of the population in quarter 2 of 2003.
  • For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 41.0 per 1,000 of the population (5,629 deaths). This compares with a rate of 42.3 per 1,000 of the population for the corresponding quarter of 2011, a decline of 3.1%. The decrease in this rate since 2003 was 19% (50.9 per 1,000 of the population).
  • There were 47 infant deaths registered in quarter 2 2012 giving an infant mortality rate of 2.6 deaths per 1,000 live births. The corresponding rate in quarter 2 2011 was 3.3 per 1,000 live births and was 5.3 per 1,000 live births in quarter 2 2003. The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) in quarter 2 2012 was 41, 2.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Almost one third (32.7%) of all deaths in the quarter were attributed to circulatory disease (2,314), while a further 29% were attributed to malignant neoplasms (2,037), 12.6% to respiratory diseases (892) and 5% to external causes (384).

 

Natural Increase

 

  • The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for quarter 2 2012 was 10,878. This represents a rate of 9.5 per 1,000 of the population, 0.2 per 1,000 of the population lower than quarter 2 of 2011.

 

Marriages

 

  • There were 5,421 marriages registered in quarter 2 2012, an increase of 396 from the number of marriages registered in quarter 2 2011 and an increase of 594 from the number registered in the corresponding quarter of 2003.
