Births, Deaths and Marriages in Quarter 1 2010


The CSO today released the Vital Statistics First Quarter 2010 report.


Some of the key points highlighted in the report are as follows:


Births

  • There were 18,535 births registered in the first quarter of 2010, a decrease of 1.3% in the number of births registered in the corresponding quarter of 2009.
  • Births in the first quarter of 2010 represented an annual birth rate of 16.6 per 1,000 population. The rate for the corresponding quarter of 2009 was 17.0 per 1,000 population and 15.6 per 1,000 population in quarter 1 2001. In quarter 1 2010, Fingal recorded the highest birth rate of 22.2 per 1,000 population, while Galway City recorded the lowest birth rate of 12.7 per 1,000 population.
  • Of the 18,535 births, there were 6,309 births registered as outside marriage. This accounted for 34% of all births. Of these, 3,399 births were to unmarried parents with the same address, 18.3% of all births. The highest percentage of births outside marriage occurred in Limerick City at 62%, while the lowest percentage occurred in Cork County and Galway County at 24%.

Deaths

  • There were 7,563 deaths registered in quarter 1 2010, a decrease of 10.2% in the number of deaths registered in the first quarter of 2009. The quarter 1 2010 total represents a death rate of 6.8 per 1,000 population, a decrease from the rate of 7.6 per 1,000 population in the corresponding quarter in 2009. The death rate in quarter 1 2001 was 8.9 per 1,000 population.
  • In the 15-24 year age category, there were 44 male deaths and 9 female deaths registered in quarter 1 2010, almost 5 male deaths for every 1 female death. In the 25-34 year age category, there were just over double the number of male deaths compared with female deaths registered, 74 males and 35 females. Disparities in gender are seen to a lesser extent throughout other age categories.
  • For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 48.9 per 1,000 population (6,052 deaths). This compares with a rate of 56.0 per 1,000 population for the corresponding quarter of 2009, a decline of 12.7%. The decrease in this rate since 2001 was 23% (63.5 per 1,000 population).
  • There were 59 infant deaths registered in quarter 1 2010 giving an infant mortality rate of 3.2 deaths per 1,000 live births. The corresponding rate in quarter 1 2009 was 3.1 per 1,000 live births and was 5.5 per 1,000 live births in quarter 1 2001. The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) in quarter 1 2010 was 37, 2.0 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Over one third (35%) of all deaths in the quarter were attributed to circulatory disease (2,654), while 27% were attributed to malignant neoplasms (2,055), 13% to respiratory diseases (1,017) and 5% to external causes (357).


Natural Increase

  • The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for quarter 1 2010 was 10,972. This represents a rate of 9.8 per 1,000 population, 0.4 above quarter 1 2009 and 3.1 above quarter 1 2001.


Marriages

  • There were 3,381 marriages registered in quarter 1 2010, 69 less than the corresponding quarter of 2009 and an increase of 1,213 from the number of marriages registered in quarter 1 2001.
