Employment decline slows to 3.7% in the year to Q3 2010
There were 1,851,500 persons in employment in the third quarter of 2010, an annual decrease of 70,900 or 3.7%. This compares with an annual decrease in employment of 4.1% in the previous quarter and a decline of 8.8% in the year to the third quarter of 2009.
On a seasonally adjusted basis employment fell by 23,500 in the quarter.
There was an annual decrease of 45,500 or 4.4% in the number of men in employment, while the number of women in employment decreased by 25,400 or 2.9%.

Number of unemployed increases to 299,000
There were 201,500 males and 97,500 females unemployed in the third quarter of 2010, bringing the total number of unemployed up to 299,000, an increase of 19,200 (+6.9%) in the year. The number of unemployed males increased by 9,500 (+4.9%), with female unemployment increasing by 9,600 (+10.9%).
On a seasonally adjusted basis the number of persons unemployed increased by 3,800 between Q2 2010 and Q3 2010.
Long-term unemployment rate increases to 6.5%
In the year to Q3 2010, the number of long-term unemployed persons increased by 69,000, bringing total long-term unemployment to 140,400. The long-term unemployment rate now stands at 6.5% compared with 3.2% in the third quarter of 2009 and 1.7% in the third quarter of 2008. As of Q3 2010, long-term unemployment accounted for almost 47.0% of total unemployment compared with 25.5% a year earlier.
